No-exam life insurance

Which applicants qualify for accelerated decisions, how the process works, and what happens if you don't qualify.

Many carriers now use accelerated underwriting: for applicants matching age and coverage limits, they issue decisions from your application, prescription history, driving record, and other data without scheduling a paramedical exam. Many decisions come within a day. Each quote here notes exam status for that specific product.

What it changes

Skipping an exam doesn't skip underwriting. Your answers get checked, and a policy issued based on false information can be disputed within the first two years. Underwriting may request an exam or labs if questions arise; you can decide at that point whether to continue.

Who tends to qualify

Usually applicants under about 60 with requests below the carrier's accelerated-underwriting cap, no serious health conditions, and non-tobacco status. Recent medical records (bloodwork from a doctor visit) sometimes substitute for a new exam.

When an exam is needed, it's usually a 20- to 30-minute appointment with a paramedical examiner at your home or workplace in the Burbank area, at no cost to you. Clean exam results often improve your rate class if you're in good health, so an exam is not always a disadvantage.
